Fitness Tip #1

People ask me all the time what they can do to lose weight and get in shape. The truth is there is a lot you can do. I think because there is a lot to do, and you get so much information on the subject, you don't know where to start. It feels overwhelming and so a lot of people just say "forget it!"
In my opinion, the key to changing your fitness level and lifestyle is mastering one principle and then moving on to something else. Don't try to do it all or to remember it all.
I've decided to throw up fitness advice here and there on my blog to help any of you working on your fitness level. So here is my fitness tip for the day:

Increase INTENSITY first and then TIME.

For example, if you are running on a treadmill at 6.0 mph for 20 minutes and you aren't seeing a lot of results, bump up your speed to 6.3 or 6.5 rather than your time. After you are running comfortably at the new speed, then you can increase your time.

You will see more results increasing the intensity of your workout rather than the time. I promise. You should feel every workout if you're expecting to see results from it. So put down that book you're reading on the teadmill and make your exercise time count--push yourself. :)

I like that advice. I am pregnant with my fourth daughter. With my 3rd child I did not exercise and it was alot harder for me to loose weight then it was with the first two whom I did walk while pregnant with. I am walking on a treadmill and doing the eliptical five times a week for a half hour. Do you have any advice on what exactly I can be doing to make sure I do not gain to much weight besides watching what I eat.

Where'd you find that picture of me running?? Totally flattering, I'm a little embarrassed. :)

Great advice. Having set times that I want to finish each portion of the triathlon has pushed me to increase intensity. It works.

So what if my workout consists of walking to the mailbox each day? I should walk FASTER to the mailbox, and not sit so long on the curb catching my breath before walking back. Am I understanding?

We trick or treated your old house tonight. I miss you so much! I remember trick or treating the year Owen was born and willing myself to talk to you for one of the first times. If I would have known..... :)

Bunch of comedians on here, I tell ya. Michele, congrats! I didn't know you were pregnant again. Pregnancy is actually a time in which increasing intensity is not suggested. You want to maintain your fitness level as best you can, but don't try to increase. When your heart rate accelerates so does the babies and I know OB's are very particular about keeping your heart rate low during workouts. So you'll just have to focus on increasing intensity after the baby is born. Congrats again.

Thanks!! I can't wait for the others. Really, I think my first step should be switching bodies with you... and then I'll be done with all steps.
